  1. Created in 1995, the International Foundation for Research in Paraplegia • IRP supports basic and clinical research in the area of CNS injury and functional recovery.
  2. In addition to giving subsidies to scientific research selected by an international panel of experts on the basis of a detailed project, the Foundation IRP has set up the Schellenberg Prize for Research – worth CHF 100’000 annually – in memory of its founder member Ulrich Schellenberg (1939 –2001).
  3. Starting in 2003, the Schellenberg Prize for Research annually gives recognition to a researcher whose recent scientific contributions, whether published or in publication in established scientific journals, are original and offer a significant advance in understanding the processes involved in spinal cord development , plasticity and regeneration.
  4. The winner undertakes to use the prize money for research by, for example,
    employing a collaborator and/or financing laboratory costs or equipment. Winners also commit to submitting a financial and scientific report on the use of Prize money within two years of receiving it.
  5. The Schellenberg Prize for Research is internationally promoted in the scientific community and proposals and submissions can also be solicited from people and organizations with knowledge of the above-mentioned area and who are active in it. The nominee’s dossier must include a description of principal results obtained, one or more recent articles as well as a current CV and a list of articles published in the last five years.

  6. The IRP Foundation’s Board attributes the award on the basis of the Schellenberg Prize for Research Jury’s recommendation.
  7. The Schellenberg Prize for Research Jury consists of two IRP Foundation Board members, one of whom is President of the Jury. At least two others members are coopted from the scientific community. Jury members are not paid. They are named for a three-year period, which can be renewed once. For the constitution of the first jury, two members have been designated for an initial four-year mandate. Administrative costs including secretariat, publicity and auditing are covered by the IRP.
  8. The Prize is awarded according to the originality and quality of published research combined with its potential for treating patients. All things being equal, it will be given to young scientists working in Europe who are still developing their careers (typically, at junior group leader level). The Prize can be shared between two winners.
  9. The presentation of the Prize takes place in Geneva or Lausanne as part of an event designed to showcase the research in the context of paraplegia and neuroprotection / neuroregeneration. The prize winner commits to being present for this event.
  10. The Prize is attributed by majority vote of the Jury with the president carrying the casting vote.
  11. The Jury’s decision is final and without appeal. No correspondence will be entered into. By submitting their work, candidates unreservedly accept these rules. The IRP Foundation’s Board can alter the rules at anytime time in consultation with the Jury. Modifications take effect in the following year.
